Newsflash: Having Sex w/ an Unconscious Drunk Person *is* Rape

I was watching To the Contrary on PBS this morning, and one of the topics was the FBI-reported decrease in rape. One of the panelists essentially attributed this decline in reported rapes to college women being slutty drunks who just give it up, and said, as best I can recall the word-for-word: “and once you black out, you can’t say it was rape.”

Oh yes you @#$%ing can. Unconscious people cannot consent to sex.

Other panelists were more tolerable, including addressing the issue of not blaming women for being raped (you know, since the rapists are the ones actually responsible). In another segment, they spoke briefly to Matthew Shepard’s mom and talked about hate crimes legislation. I’ll update with the link to the transcript after it’s available.

Update: The transcript is now available. The offending statement was:

I think this is in part because of the acceptability of promiscuity that’s been promoted by the feminist movement. Now, all college girls go out, it’s okay to get drunk, have sex with three or four guys. Well, if you’re putting yourself in that kind of situation, chances are you’re going to be violated. But once you’ve entered that zone, once you’ve blacked out, you can’t say it’s a rape.

It was said by Amanda Carpenter of the Washington Times.

O wonder how said panelist would feel if he woke up after a night of drinking to find he had been sodomized? Oh wait- but it wouldn’t be rape, right😉.

Infuriating, regressive attitude that makes me wonder, once again, just what it is that we have achieved in progress for women over the past thirty years. I do believe we are going backwards swiftly toward “The Handmaiden’s Tale.”

Sometimes I find myself wondering if they just get these people to say such fool things because they know it’ll make for ‘better’ TV. Because I just don’t want to even think about someone being so pig ignorant. For God’s sake there have been after-school specials about this! How much more youth-targeted can we get?!? Does there have to be a No Means No picture book?
