New York to End Shackling of Pregnant Women in Labor

August 19, 2009

New York Governor David Paterson appeared in response to recent protests to pledge to sign legislation that would prevent the shackling of pregnant women during labor and delivery.

See this post from Emily at RH Reality Check, and the New York ACLU for more, and National Advocates for Pregnant Women for more information on issues of pregnant women’s rights in general.

Did you ever think you would have to write a title of a post like that in “modern” times? Yuck. I wrote about shackling pregnant women, and received a comment from a former pregnant inmate. Here is her story :http://realityrounds.com/2009/06/29/judgement/

It really made me think about how we judge people.

You would hope, right? Will have to take a look at that comment, thanks for sharing.

As a nurse in the ICU, I’ve had patients that were shackled to their beds. However, they were all volatile men who were being monitored after prison ODs, or suspected ODs. They would rip their IVs out and throw their trays at me, just out of spite.

I can’t imagine a laboring woman having to shackled as well, without just cause. It was awful for me being hooked to a fetal monitor without telemetry, and laboring for 36 hours like that (necessary, in my case, but some telemetry would have been better.)
