Sometimes Being Southern Isn’t Enough…

March 10, 2009

…to give a woman the skills to respond gracefully to some nonsense. All the “bless his heart, but that man ain’t right”s in the world don’t quite cover it when the Family Action Council’s David Fowler gives an interview about reproductive health-related bills in Tennessee that will be up for committee discussion tomorrow and says this:

“Many women think it’s just a blog[sic?] of cells or tissues. But literally within eight days, I think you can notice the heartbeat on the sonogram and when they begin to understand the truth about what is inside their body, they recognize it as a human being and a child.”

Really, 8 days, beating heart, visible to all the world on a sonogram! It’s a magic heretofore unknown to humans! And reasonable people can disagree about abortion, but they surely can’t disagree that us lady folks just aren’t smart enough or haven’t thought long and hard enough about what we’re doing when we choose abortion. Who knows what’s goin’ on in those lady parts! It’s a mystery – a deep, dark, dirty mystery! We’d never choose abortion if we just *knew* anything!

Dude was a state Senator for 12 years and now runs a little group trying to influence policy on abortion and other “family” things. And he really thinks a lot of the ladies!

I’m trying to curtail the sarcasm, I really, really am.

And, oh, this:

Q: Do you think that would be OK with the U.S. Supreme Court? [“that” being mandatory ultrasounds for abortion]

Fowler: I think so. To my knowledge it’s not yet been challenged, but a number of states have passed those. I think it would be constitutional because you don’t require the doctor to show the sonogram. You simply require the doctor to inform them that a sonogram has been taken and they have the right to see it.

Is Fowler seriously implying here that a woman would need to be informed that a “sonogram has been taken?” Surely not. Because if he thinks that, my brain is just gonna go right ahead and explode, and I’m going to have to introduce him to the phrase “dildo cam.”

Aunt B, who rightly calls out the reporter in the comments to this story for not bothering to fact check Fowler before posting, has her own required reading commentary on the piece. B, in a righteous fury, says:

“Women of Tennessee, I don’t care where you stand on the abortion issue. I just want you to read that and see it for what it is. Fowler CANNOT EVEN BOTHER TO LEARN ABOUT WHAT GOES ON BETWEEN A WOMAN AND HER DOCTOR BUT HE THINKS HE SHOULD GET TO SET THE LAWS TO GOVERN IT. Just let that evil sink in. He cannot even bother to get his facts straight, he can’t be bothered to learn about what you might go through if you have an abortion, he can just make shit THAT IS PLAINLY NOT TRUE. Just demonstrably false. LIES, lies, lies.”

Just go read the rest, and note the title: Women of Tennessee, We are Screwed.

Added: An excellent comment on the informed consent statements Fowler made.

Um, there isn’t even a heart at 8 days. I saw my son’d HB at 5w5d and that was early. Most can’t be seen until 6.5 weeks. And yeah- only can be seen with the dildocam at this stage. Um, is the Dr going to be required to say, ” I am inserting the wand…”

Mrs Spock, I know – and it occurs to me that talking to just one woman who has ever been pregnant might have cleared up that confusion, but I guess Fowler has better things to do. And this guy thinks he should be influencing policy, and people give him a venue to speak about that. Argh.

Mrs Spock picked up on the point I wanted to make. Really, 8 days? Is this post conception? Wow~ that is some amazing ultrasound!

I’m serious, it’s a magic heretofore unknown to humans! lol (except not really funny…)
