The Alternative Approach to Menopause Symptoms

June 2, 2008

In a recent thread soliciting topics of interest to readers, GingerSnaps suggested menopause. Menopause is a huge topic, of course, so today I want to focus on a resource that reviews complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), as many women look to these approaches to address symptoms.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (part of the National Institutes of Health) summarizes what is known from scientific research about numerous popular alternative therapies and techniques, as well as on specific conditions, including menopause. What I like about this site is that the Center is not involved in selling any supplements and it presents basic information about what is known about the effectiveness and safety of CAM approaches.

Their page, Menopausal Symptoms and CAM, is a good place to start, as are these related links.

Our Bodies Ourselves also has some great content (including on “natural” products and the medicalization of menopause) in their “Midlife and Menopause” section, including excerpts from their book, “Our Bodies, Ourselves: Menopause.”

Rachel – one thing to keep in mind about CAM is that it is highly biased against studies that it deems “non-scientific.” Many studies on alternative therapies for menopause have been underfunded or have enrolled what groups like CAM feel are not of ample size. There is some very interesting research on chinese medicine, western herbs, and integrative medicine out there, but it’s not always accessible. I encourage you to visit my site for more information. By day, I’m a medical writer/reporter so I am pretty well-versed in reading and interpreting data. Cheers and love your blog.

Hi Rachel…I also want to point out rvita.com as a great source for CAM info. They give all the efficacy data on different CAM treatments for different conditions including menopause, infertility, pregnancy etc.

    Hi Rachel,

Can you mention some alternative supplement that reduce hormonal imbalance due to menopause?
