Pregnancy, Drug Use, and Jail Time in Mississippi

May 21, 2008

Go see Aunt B’s place for discussion of a Mississippi woman who was sentenced to 12 years in prison on a manslaughter charge after cocaine was found in the bloodstream of her stillborn. I haven’t had time to do any digging on this and whether the cocaine exposure was determined to be the cause of the stillbirth or the details of the case, so check out B’s in the meantime.

And, as you dig into what the cause of death was said to be, be sure to keep in mind Balko’s interest in the case, which is that the autopsy was done by this man.

From the article: “An autopsy performed by medical examiner Steven Hayne in Jackson determined the cause of death of the infant was cocaine toxicity.” Take it for what it’s worth, I suppose, but a blood test is typically done by a lab tech, not the examiner.
