The Hidden Effects of Domestic Violence

March 4, 2008

City of Hope, an organization in Dubai that provides refugee for battered women and children, has commissioned these domestic violence ads that highlight the hidden marks left by violent acts. The caption reads, for the bracelet, “He gave me this for our anniversary,” and “He gave me this for nothing at all,” for the fracture. They’re powerful ads – I only wish the text was more prominent. Semi-Related: Why is it that PSAs and other ads for non-profits and general do-gooders always have too-small text? When I worked for a non-profit, I always took notice of highway billboards for such organizations, and one thing they nearly all had in common was text that was too small to properly convey they relevant message from a driving distance/speed. This applied even to the Ad Council pieces, and it’s not as though they’re inexperienced with this sort of thing.

That’s an excellent point about the font being too small on many PSA ads. I feel as if they’re almost trying to be subtle about the message they’re sending. Would these ads have the same effect if the font was excessively large? They want you to notice the image first and then the text. A billboard on the other hand shouldn’t follow the same convention as you really don’t have time to stop and read.

Love is a misunderstanding between two fools. Meaning, you have one fool that stays or the fool that slays. Not in all cases but many women would you believe chooses to stay with their abusive partner and for what – another unexpected punch. Get help fast if you are stuck in a relationship where your heart is broken and your bones. If you are scared please talk to someone.

Kassandra, the images belong to City of Hope, the organization in Dubai that commissioned them. You’ll need to contact them; best of luck with your brochures.
