Thursday, March 13, 6:00 pm - Free lecture by David Haig, Maternal-Fetal Conflicts in Human Pregnancy
Harvard Museum of Natural History
24 Oxford Street in the Geological Lecture Hall
http://www.hmnh.harvard.edu/lectures_and_special_events/index.php
Pregnancy is the most intimate of human relationships and, just like any other relationship, there is potential for both cooperation and conflict. In this lecture, Dr. Haig, Professor of Biology at Harvard, will discuss the various genetic conflicts that transpire within the human womb, and visit the assumption that what’s good for the mother is also good for the fetus. Haig will consider evolutionary conflicts over the amount of maternal blood flowing to the placenta, and use this perspective to consider the causes of preeclampsia.
Friday, March 28, 6:30 pm - Free screening of the film Absolutely Safe and Q&A with the director
Boston University: Sargent College, Room 101
635 Commonwealth Avenue
Excerpts from the press release:
Millions of women around the world have breast implants. In the United States alone, hundreds of thousands of women get breast implants every year. Today, breast augmentation surgery is the number one cosmetic procedure in the U.S. and a multi-billion dollar industry. But, at a time when more women than ever are getting breast implants, fewer voices than ever seem to be asking “Why?” And, fewer still are asking “Are they safe?” The new 83 minute documentary ABSOLUTELY SAFE asks serious questions about this popular cosmetic surgery.
ABSOLUTEY SAFE is directed and produced by Carol Ciancutti-Leyva, executive produced by acclaimed filmmaker
Jennifer Fox, edited by Emmy-Award winning Editor Vincent Stenerson, and features the music of renowned composer Miriam Cutler. For more information on the screening contact: info at absolutelysafe dot com or (212)868-9780. Visit the film’s website www.absolutelysafe.com

From an email:
Please join us for the 21st season Premiere of the PG-13 Players!
It’s the official start of the 2007-2008 season and this year 5 brand new skits will be unveiled.
It’s always eye-opening to see what issues are affecting youth and how they deal with life changes. Plus, the Premiere is always entertaining!
Teen Actors Help Peers Tackle Tough Issues
When? Where?
Planned Parenthood of Middle and East Tennessee announces the 2007 Premiere of the PG-13 Players at 7 pm on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at the Darkhorse Theatre in West Nashville. This free premiere will kick off the twenty-first season of the PG-13 Players performing before local audiences at schools, churches and synagogues, parent and teacher groups and civic organizations.
What’s PG-13
The PG-13 Players (PG stands for Peer Guidance) are a group of racially and socially diverse teen actors from various high schools in the Nashville area. As a group, they develop and perform skits dealing with a variety of teen issues: teenage pregnancy, body image, alcohol and drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, relationships, prejudice and suicide – all topics of concern to teens and to the adults who care about them. The goal of the PG-13 Players is not to give out easy answers, but to increase sensitivity in dealing with real-life situations. Through their dramatic presentation, teen issues are brought to life – not just talked about.
Where do the Skits Come From
The PG-13 Players go through intensive educational training (more than 60 hours) to become more aware of issues facing today’s teens, and then create realistic skits about characters struggling with these problems. Each skit is left open-ended, with the situation unresolved. The actors remain in character and solicit audience input. Audience members are invited to explore the characters’ motivations, feelings, decisions and alternatives for the future.
This year’s Premiere promises to be entertaining and very worthwhile! We’ll see you at the Darkhorse Theatre September 11th at 7:00pm!

Wellcome Images is a fascinating collection of contemporary and historical images from medicine and social history - it includes a Biomedical Collection, which “holds over 40,000 high-quality images from the clinical and biomedical sciences. Selected from the UK’s leading teaching hospitals and research institutions, it covers disease, surgery, general healthcare, sciences from genetics to neuroscience including the full range of imaging techniques.”
Even better, Wellcome has made the images freely available for non-commercial use under a pair of Creative Commons licenses. It also appears that they’re planning a bit of 2.0 by allowing comments on the images in the near future.
The ability to browse by topic is somewhat dismal, but the collection is well worth a look. The first image displayed here is a 16th century (estimated) iron chastity belt with padlock [credit: Wellcome Library, London]. Looks, comfy, no? The contrast of heart and flower decorations with the notion of an iron, padlocked chastity belt just floors me. The second is a Chinese woodcut illustration published in 1591 displaying acupuncture/moxibustion points for treating amenorrhea [Credit: Wellcome library, London, from the library of the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, by Chen Yan]. Click on either of these images to view a larger version.
Thanks to medical librarian Anna Schnitzer for the tip [via a medlibs listserv].

Radical Doula has details on the upcoming New York Healthy Birth Fair, a free event on Saturday, July 21 (11am-7pm). According to this release,
Choices in Childbirth, The Grassroots Advocates Committee of CIMS and Friends of the Birth Center will raise awareness of these maternity-care issues by organizing the first ever New York Healthy Birth Fair. They are creating an opportunity for the public to connect with mother-friendly providers, hear about current maternity-care trends and gather information about their rights and options in birth.
The New York Healthy Birth Fair will see the launch of important projects that will increase transparency in maternity care as well as help change the landscape of birth in New York City . These projects include the New York City pilot of The Birth Survey ; the release of the 2nd edition of The New York Guide to a Healthy Birth ; and the public announcement of plans for an independent Manhattan-based Birth Center.
Mother-friendly practitioners such as childbirth educators, doulas, midwives, lactation consultants and massage therapists in addition to not-for-profit organizations dedicated to improving maternity care will be sharing information with the public about their services and/or products. Women will relax, share birth stories, belly dance, participate in prenatal yoga and other activities in a red tent. A community birth-art project will grow throughout the day as participants add their birth imagery to the inner walls of an installation piece designed to engage viewers. A craft/play tent will attract children for projects.
Radical Doula is also working on an interesting series, “Kick-Ass Radical Doulas.” She is highlighting doulas and doula programs to profile, especially those working with underserved women, so if you are or know one, drop her a line. Her first installment features doulas who provide support to incarcerated women giving birth in Western Washington State. Check it out.

Planned Parenthood of Middle and East Tennessee is offering free HIV tests in Nashville next Wednesday, June 27th, in recognition of National HIV Testing Day; scroll down to find free testing info for other cities. From the email alert:
June 27th Is National HIV Testing Day
In the United States, half of all new HIV infections occur in people under age 25; one-fourth in people under the age of 21.*
The goal of National HIV Testing Day is to encourage you to know your HIV status by participating in an anonymous or confidential HIV testing program.
HIV counseling and testing helps people with HIV to take steps to protect their own health and that of their partners, and helps people who test negative get the information they need to stay uninfected.
To help serve the health needs of our community, Planned Parenthood of Middle and East Tennessee will be offering FREE, that’s right, FREE HIV Tests at its Health Center in Nashville, TN on Wednesday, June 27th from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm!
The Health Center is located at 412 D.B. Todd Blvd (where Charlotte Ave. meets 18th Ave.). No appointment necessary! For questions, call 615.321.7216.
