For People Coming from Alternet: The Genital Cosmetic Surgery Post
August 20, 2009
If you happen to be coming here from Rebecca Chalker’s The ‘Perfect’ Porn Vulva: More Women Demanding Cosmetic Genital Surgery piece on Alternet, here’s the specific post here that she refers to: Vaginal “Rejuvenation” Not Safe or Necessary (with links to several past pieces on the topic).
Chalker has a website that I haven’t really explored yet but will go ahead and share: The Clitoral Truth.

For Pete’s sake. Ladies, there is nothing wrong with your vaginas.
Reading this information just makes me sad and frustrated. I wonder how it is that women can be so unhappy with their genitalia that they are demanding to have parts of it cut off. It also makes me frustrated that there are gynecologists and surgeons, who are ready and willing to support and exploit a woman’s unhappiness with body parts that need no alterations or changes to be “normal.” How do doctors not see these surgeries as harmful, especially given the lack of evidence supporting the efficacy of the procedures?
There is a medical student at my school who is quite an interesting person. She is a strange self hating woman, loudly complaining about how horrid the lady bits were whenever we had to study them, in three part harmony. Well, her first rotation was ob/gyn, of course. I saw her afterwards, and she was glowing, saying she had enjoyed her rotation. I was quietly, self-righteously happy, and when I asked her why she liked her experience so much, she said the physician she shadowed did vaginal rejuvenation surgeries almost ever morning.
Insert ironic trombone noise here. Wah wah wah.
Ha! I just read the read the older post (sorry for the double post). I seem to be full of med student labiaplasty stories. Thanks, I’ll be here all night.
