You cannot hope to address the number of women breastfeeding their children without addressing our country’s policies on maternity leave. If more women are able to stay home with their children while continuing to be compensated or at least assured that they will still have a job, breastfeeding will increase.
Heather, I would definitely encourage you to submit that comment to the HHS. They specifically have asked for comments on paid maternity leave as one area of interest.
They also need to address access to clean, comfortable, non-demeaning places to pump in the workplace. Women should also be allowed time to pump. I found this to be one of the biggest road blocks to breastfeeding when I went back to work, and I work with new moms and infants! Kinda ironic.
