Prophylactics, Propaganda, and Posters, Oh My!

Via Morbid Anatomy, the National Museum of Health and Medicine has uploaded a bunch of the historical images they’ve been digitizing to Flickr while they’re working on completing their official online archive.
Many of the currently available photos are related to WWI, field/military medicine, prostheses, etc. The image to the left is by Venereal Disease Control Office, L.J. Stephens, Captain, Medical Corps, Jefferson Barracks, M.O. (used under a Creative Commons license). Apparently our government knew some things during WWII that they’ve forgotten now.

Somewhat related in the field of vintage sexual health ads… my favorite ever is called “VD is for everybody”, from 1969. It’s the most charming little song about how VD can happen even to happy people who deserve better.
