This Just Seems Mean-Spirited

Posted by Rachel on January 5, 2008

According to reports, the Montana Department of Corrections is attempting to prevent those on parole or probation from receiving medical marijuana (which is legal in that state). Here’s the thing – it’s medical marijuana, intended to relieve the suffering of those with serious conditions, such as terminal cancer patients in unfathomable pain. Aside from which, it’s legal – the news coverage doesn’t indicate whether they also want to or do prevent the sick from receiving other legal drugs, such as prescription painkillers – you know, because they might enjoy it. The measure is supposedly intended to prevent recidivism, but it certainly comes across as a mean-spirited action – mess up once, and the Department thinks you should have a more painful, nauseated period before you die of cancer. Grrr.

    This doesn’t surprise me.

Americans are obsessed with controlling marijuana when they’d be far better off educating and better enforcing alcohol laws seeing as it’s a drug that has a direct correlation with illness and death.

And this is just cruel and mean-spirited. Don’t these people have rapists or pedophiles that need their attention far more?
