Signs You Need to Find a New Pregnancy/Birth Care Provider

July 28, 2007

Well Preserved has come up with this list of 12 signs that it’s time to look for a new care provider for your pregnancy and birth. Among them:

2. After you give your doctor your birth plan, s/he says, “Its the moms who come in with the birth plans that end up with the cesareans.”
-
3. You hear this: “If you don’t go into labor on your own by ___ weeks, we’ll need to…”
-
4. The practice won’t release their cesarean rates

I would add the following items:
13) Your hospital has bans on innocuous things such as birthing balls or recording video for reasons that have nothing to do with your care, and everything to do with a misguided concern about liability.
14) You hear the words, “the baby’s too big,” and you’re not even in labor yet.
14b) You’re told you will have to have a c-section based on the baby’s size, despite evidence that size estimates are notoriously inaccurate.

Have more to add to Well Preserved’s list? Go let her know.

Update: Hilary of Mom’s Tinfoil Hat has some excellent additions to the list.

No offense Rachel, but I may have to quit reading you for awhile now that my wife is pregnant. I just can’t handle the blood pressure spikes.

W, completely understandable. Do let me know if you want me to find information on anything, though.
