Summer Reading List
A list of books I plan to read (and possibly review) this summer, once I pay that fine I owe to that other library. Ahem.
- Born in the USA: how a broken maternity system must be fixed to put mothers and infants first, Marsden Wagner. This one’s a re-read, as I meant to review it and didn’t have time.
- Monique and the mango rains: two years with a midwife in Mali, Kris Holloway
- Pushed: the painful truth about childbirth and modern maternity care, Jennifer Block
- S.E.X. – the all-you-need-to-know progressive sexuality guide to get you through high school and college, Heather Corinna. I’m not exactly the target audience, but I bet it’s good. More info here.
Any other suggestions? I’m not deliberately reading mostly birth-focused books, there just happen to be several that look good that I’ve heard of recently. Leave a comment and I’ll update the post if I think it will be a good read.
Reader suggestions:
-Enslaved: true stories of modern slavery, Jessee Sage and Liora Kasten, suggested by Sarah at the American Anti-Slavery Group
-Complaints and disorders: the sexual politics of sickness and Witches, midwives, and nurses: a history of women healers, Barbara Ehrenreich (Glass Mountain Pamphlets), suggested by Hilary of Mom’s Tinfoil Hat.

Hi there,
Given your interest in human trafficking, you may want to check out Enslaved: True Stories of Modern Day Slavery. It’s a collection of personal stories by survivors (most of them women) of human trafficking and modern-day slavery from around the world, including the U.S.
Disclosure: I work for the American Anti-Slavery Group, which published the book…but it is a good read! I’d love to see it reviewed on the site.
Thank you very much for the suggestion, Sarah. We seem to have this in our library system, and I’ll definitely check it out.
I’ve got a copy of Monique and the Mango Rains if you’d like to do a trade (email me if you’re interested). I wrote a review of it here, too.
I have Barbara Ehrenreich’s Glass Mountain Pamphlets on my wish list at Amazon, but I doubt I will get to read them before med school starts in a week. I also have at least one of the books on your reading list on there already. Please do your reviews if you read them!
Hilary,
Will do! I’m adding two of the pamphlets that I know of to the list – let me know if I missed any.
